はやる【流行る】
1 〔時代の好みに合う〕 be in fashion [vogue]; be fashionable; be trendy; 〔人気がある〕 be popular.

●はやってくる, はやりだす come into fashion [vogue]; become fashionable [trendy]; grow in popularity

・はやらなくなる go out of fashion [vogue, style]; fall into disfavor; become old-fashioned; lose (popular) favor; fall into disuse

・またはやりだす come back into fashion

・はやらせる popularize; set the fashion; bring into fashion

・…するのははやらない it is unfashionable to do.

●若者の間でスケートボードが非常にはやっている. Skateboarding is all the rage with young people these days.

・その色はもうはやっていない. That color is no longer in fashion.

2 〔繁盛する〕 prosper; flourish; thrive; do (a) good business; 〔得意客が多い〕 have a large clientele; (弁護士・医者が) have a large practice.

●はやっている店 a flourishing store; a store doing booming business; 〔料理店〕 a fashionable [widely patronized] restaurant; a restaurant with a large clientele

・はやらせる make 《business》 prosper.

●よくはやる医者 a physician with a large [thriving] practice.

●あの店は非常にはやっている. That store is doing a roaring business.

・あの医者ははやっている. That doctor has a large practice.

3 〔病気などが広がる〕 prevail; be prevalent. [⇒りゅうこう 2]

●(病気が)はやりだす become prevalent; break out

・(病気が)はやっている be prevalent; be raging.

●大阪ではインフルエンザが非常にはやっていた. Influenza was raging in Osaka.
